Photo of Nevado del Ruiz from the north. On the evening of November 13, 1985, snow and ice on this summit ice cap melted and provided water for lahars. One formed on the northeast flank (Rio Azufrado) while a second originated on the Rio Lagunillas to the east. The two flows traveled down their respective valleys independently and joined. Around 11:30 pm the first lahar exited the mountain front and burst upon Armero, followed by a second surge. Photo by Milton Ordóñez Servicio Geológico Colombiano (SGC)
