The dashed lines represent the relationship between the penetration boundary energy and the plate thickness. The dotted line indicates the modelled impact energy of 9 kJ for 128 mm diameter, spherical ballistic ejecta (2.66 kg at approximately 83 m/s on impact) that were ejected during the Mt. Ontake eruption in 2014. As shown, for a given plate thickness, SUS304 is superior to SS400 in terms of impact resistance
