New Zealand workplace fatality rates per employee per year. The values come from all fatalities in the workplace, including non-workers, divided by the number of workers in the sector; as such this overstates the risk to the workers, but is still useful for comparative purposes. Fatality data comes WorkSafe New Zealand (2017b), and the data on the number of workers in each sector is from the New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment (2017). Volcanologists are grouped under ‘Professional, scientific & technical’. After Taig and McSaveney (2014)
